Mineral Crushing Methods for Noble Gas Analyses of Fluid Inclusions

چکیده

Noble gases are frequently probed for investigating fluid inclusions in minerals to unravel rock-forming processes through time. Over the last decades, heating and crushing have been two main methods applied noble gas extraction from ultrahigh vacuum (about 10-9 mBar). The of or pieces bulk rock causes release both mineral matrix, latter due temperature-dependent dehydration. Crushing only affects allows a at room temperature with minor contributions matrix. This review describes different ultravacuum techniques analysis inclusions. It examines technical details operational conditions each system as well prepare samples prior crushing. systems were found unique designs across laboratories reviewed; they include single multiple sample loadings manual, magnetic, hydraulic operation pistons. Due small amounts released, technology requires several mg few grams material achieve measurement all stable isotopes inclusion. While theoretically interest, elements reported studies vary widely reference materials laboratory intercomparisons lacking. includes applications on origins magmatic rocks geochemical Earth’s mantle, origin chemical composition deep crustal fluids how these contribute formation economic paleoclimate based speleothems.

Mineral chemistry of magnetite and fluid inclusions studies in the Kuh-Baba iron deposit, south of Hashtroud, NW Iran

The Kuh-Baba iron ore deposit is located about 70 km south of Hashtroud, East-Azarbaidjan Province, NW Iran. The deposit is genetically affiliated with intrusive bodies of gabbroic to dioritic composition. The principal host rocks for the Fe mineralization include units of gabbro-norite and pyroxene hornblende gabbro-norite. The widespread alteration zones which are accompanied with Fe-minerali...

Search for Xe in Mineral Grains from Allende Inclusions: An Exercise in Miniaturized Rare Gas Analysis

Dedicated to Professor H. Hintenberger on the occasion of his 70th birthday* A static mass spectrometer, modified by installation of a Baur-Signer (Zürich) ion source and an ion-counting system, was used to detect xenon from single mineral grains from inclusions in the C3 meteorite Allende. The grains were melted in small conical heaters wound from tungsten wire. In almost all cases excess 1 2 ...

Fundamentals of Noble Gas Thermochronometry

The ideal geochronometer would be a universally stable phase that quantitatively retains both parent and daughter isotopes. Though a few mineral systems such as zircon U-Pb dating come reasonably close to this ideal, most minerals are incompletely retentive of daughterproduct nuclides under crustal conditions. The mechanisms by which the daughter product can be lost from minerals include dissol...
